Placement Testing

For entering students, Leeward uses a variety of ways to check your skill levels in English and Math, so you’ll be placed in the right level of those classes.

Please note: Leeward offers ESL classes and ENG 100E especially for students whose first language is not English. Take the Accuplacer ESL Placement Test at the Test Center to determine your English language level.

Three Options…

1. Accuplacer Testing

Please schedule an appointment to take the Accuplacer Placement Test at any of our campuses:

When requesting an appointment, include:

  • Your full name
  • Email address
  • University of Hawai’i ID number


2. Self Report Form 

You can use any of the placement measures below. If one of the measures below leads to placement in a developmental education class, you have the option of taking a placement test if you think it will improve your placement.

Placement measures for entering students:

  • Cumulative High School GPA
  • 12th Grade English Grade
  • 12th Grade Intro to College Math Grade
  • 12th Grade Alg 3, Trig, or Pre Calc Grade
  • Algebra II grade
  • Algebra I grade
  • ACT Writing / Math score
  • SAT Writing / Math score
  • HiSET Language Arts / Math score
  • GED Language Arts / Math score
  • Smarter Balanced Assessment (English)
  • Smarter Balanced Assessment (math)

If you use any of the above measures, please complete the Self Report form and email it to lrecruit@hawaii.edu.

3. EdReady

If you need to take a placement test for English or Math, you can use an online option through EdReady.

For Math: Use the EdReady Math Path Suggestion form to determine which path to take.  Select the suggested path based on your major.

Math

Are you ready for college? Then you need to prepare for the required math placement exam! The Online Learning Academy (University of Hawai‘i) is offering a FREE math prep program through EdReady, an online program which identifies gaps in your knowledge and prepares you to do your best on this exam. EdReady creates a self-paced, personalized learning plan to help you acquire additional skills and content knowledge for your specific needs. EdReady is available 24 hours a day and seven days a week.

What about Reading & Writing Sections of the Placement Test?

Leeward’s Writing Center can help you prepare to take (or retake) the Accuplacer WritePlacer or ESL placement tests:

  • You can meet for free individual sessions (in the Writing Center, online via SKYPE, or by phone) to review writing and reading skills;
  • You can attend free workshops in the Writing Center and
  • You can access free online Accuplacer learning resources, including practice tests or see below for specific subject resources
