Pūpū A 'O 'Ewa Native Hawaiian Arts and Literary Magazine

The College is proud to announce the creation of a new online Native Hawaiian Literary Magazine, Pūpū A 'O 'Ewa.

Submission Guidelines
Pūpū A 'O 'Ewa is soliciting submissions in English, Hawaiian, and Hawai'i Creole (Pidgin) dealing with Native Hawaiian identity, language and literature, history, arts and crafts, politics, lands, water, and nature in the following genres:

  • Essays
  • Short stories
  • Poetry
  • Art
  • Photography
  • Videos
  • Music

Submitted entries must be original work that has not been published in a printed publication. If you wish to submit material that has previously been published electronically, please inform us of where and when it was published.

Submission Deadline
All submissions for consideration for the Ho'oilo (Fall) 2012 issue are being accepted now through September 30, 2012. Each submission must include a completed Submission Form.

Eligibility
Pūpū A 'O 'Ewa accepts works by any Leeward CC student, faculty, lecturer and staff member as well as the UH community and the general public.

How to Submit Your Work
1. Complete the Submission Form

2. Email the form and work to pupu [at] hawaii [dot] edu (limit file size to 10 MB)

3. For files larger that 10MB, upload via UH File Drop website

Scholarship Opportunity

Students submitting written work may want to consider applying for the Ka 'Umeke Kā'eo Language Arts Native Hawaiian Writing Tuition Assistance Awards. To be considered for Ka 'Umeke Kā'eo, students must have Leeward CC as their home campus and carry at least 6 credits this semester. Website: http://www.leeward.hawaii.edu/kaumeke

Technical Specifications

Specifications for Essays, Short Stories, Poetry

  • Must be submitted in either .doc or .rtf format
  • Not to exceed 20 pages, double-spaced

Specifications For Video

  • Running time: 5 minutes or less
  • File Size: 50MB maximum [I have to check with Randy]
  • Frame size: 720x480 [I have to check with Les in EMC]
  • Preferred format: .mov (Quicktime)
  • Acceptable formats: mpg, avi, wmv

Specifications For Audio

  • Running time: 5 minutes or less
  • Preferred format: .mp3, .mp2, .aif

Specifications For Digital Artwork

  • Minimum file dimensions: 720x480, 96 dpi (the higher the resolution and size, the better)
  • Preferred formats: Photoshop, JPEG
  • Acceptable formats: jpg, png psd, ai, eps, pdf, tif
  • If text is used, be sure to rasterize fonts layer in Photoshop or create outlines in Illustrator

Specifications For Non-Digital Artwork

  • Submission must be in a digital format
  • Scanned Images of non-digital/photos/three dimensional art
  • Scan the image at 300dpi at a size of 5 x 7 inches
  • Save the image in JPG format.
