Hawaii State Science Olympiad State Finals on Campus

More than 600 middle to high school students jumped into the Hawaii State Science Olympiad State Finals Tournament, hosted by our college on Saturday, March 1. The emphasis of the tournament was on advanced learning in science through active, hands-on individual and group participation.

The events encouraged learning in biology, earth science, chemistry, physics, problem solving and technology.  Many of our science faculty assisted with the event, and Chemistry Instructor Bradley Ashburn was Director for this  State Finals Tournament.  Prior to this event, Leeward hosted the Hawaii State Science Olympiad Regional Tournament on February 2. with Helmut Kae as the Regional Director which involved more than 300 students.

In addition to Bradley and Helmut, Leeward faculty and staff who contributed to the success of this annual event included Michael Lane, Roger Kwok, Patricia Domingo, Michael Reese, Nikolaj Nordkvist, Rhea Hautea, Adrienne Sentell, Danilo Licudine, and Jeff Tibbett.  Our Chancellor Manny Cabral is a avid supporter of this event, which began when he was division chair of Math & Sciences!
