March 18 is the deadline to apply for the 24th Community College Writing-Across-the-Curriculum Institute +. Stipends are available for faculty. The “+” indicates that writing as a way of learning includes an emphasis on critical and creative thinking. The intense two week workshop runs from August 1-15 at Kapi‘olani. Participants meet daily from 8:30 am to 3:00 pm for 11 days. The Institute is sponsored by Kapi‘olani CC.
After the 2009 Institute, it was decided to move to an every-other-year schedule and to integrate classroom assessment techniques into the WAC+ Institute. The 2008 NSSE report notes that writing-heavy courses engage students in deeper learning techniques such as the analysis and synthesis of a concept from multiple sources. In addition, students in writing-heavy courses reported more "personal, social, practical and academic learning and development."
Overall funding is provided by Kapiolani in partnership with the Hawaiʻi Writing Project. Faculty can receive a $200 stipend upon approval of their application by Leeward CC. Faculty must receive prior approval before submitting application.
Interested faculty should contact Della Kunimune before submitting their application.
The deadline to apply is March 18, 2011.
