Learning Communities Coalition: Meeting on February 18
Interested in Learning Communities? Want to know how to get involved? The Learning Communities Coalition is a group of instructors who value the Learning Community approach to making connections with students and to integrating subject matter.
Plans for 12 Learning Communities to be offered for fall 2011 include 6 Learning Communities on the Pearl City Campus and 6 at Leeward CC Waianae. While most of the current plans include English courses, not all do. Almost any two or more classes can be combined to form a Learning Community. Learning Communities create partnerships between instructors and courses sharing the same group of students.
Kapiolani CC offers a Learning Community Institute each May, for those who may be interested in exploring a Learning Community for spring 2012. We also expect to offer training options for the College Success course using the Skip Downing On Course text. If you’d like to offer a section of College Success within your Division or program, please consider joining us.
If you’re interested in either the training or our planning, please contact Chris Manaseri, Kay Caldwell or any other member of the Coalition: Lance Morita, Sandra Kelley, San Albers, Jennifer Wharton, Danny Wyatt, Melanie Van der Tuin, Kristi Ayers, Sandy Hoshino, Kami Kato, Laurie Lawrence, Summer Miles, Jonathan Wong, Nicole Keim-Fortuno, and Blake Hunrick. We’re happy to share what we think is good work and our experiences.
If you’d like to join our conversation, the Coalition will meet again on Friday February 18 at 1 PM in DA 200. Please mark your calendar and plan to join us to grow this creative strategy for promoting student success.
