New Health Science Complex Opens
A partnership between Leeward and Kapiolani Community Colleges to deliver the Associates Degree in Nursing (ADN) to students residing in the Leeward area, came to fruition with the blessing and open house of the new Health Sciences Complex on Thursday, April 1 on the campus of Leeward Community College.
In response to requests made by community residents and legislators for nursing education to be taught in the Leeward area, the first cohort of twenty students began their nursing course work in January in alternative classroom space between the two institutions, but only today were they able to officially move in to their new classrooms and laboratories in the new Health Sciences Complex.
Over sixty college, government, and community leaders attended the blessing and open house this morning, along with several of the current cohort of nursing students.
Guest speakers at today’s event included
Manuel Cabral, Chancellor at Leeward Community College
Leon Richards, Chancellor at Kapiolani Community College
Michael Unebasami, Associate VP for Administrative Affairs at the UH Community Colleges Office
Rida Cabanilla, House of Representative
Marci Healy, current nursing student
The blessing was done by Kahu Kaleo Patterson who is President of Pacific Justice and Reconciliation Center and also a graduate of Leeward Community College.
