A Time to Stand Together

Aloha Leeward ‘Ohana,

The past few months have been trying times for our communities.  Last week, the death of George Floyd sparked national and international demonstrations.  The death of an African American man at the knee of a white police officer is unacceptable and is a vivid expression of the racial injustice that continues across our nation.  Our Leeward ‘ohana sends our deepest sympathies to those who have been directly impacted, and to everyone whose hearts are broken.

The national turmoil is a reminder of how critical it is for all of us to embrace our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion; and to strongly advocate with compassion. The College’s core values of Community, Integrity, Diversity & Respect remind us that we are all human beings; benefiting from celebration, knowledge, and acceptance of one another’s differences.

We have the power to make positive changes, demonstrate inclusivity, and social justice through our education. As stated in our mission, “We foster students to become responsible global citizens… and advance the educational goals of all.”  As a community college, our mission not only focuses on our students, but also on the communities we serve.  We stand together to mourn the death of George Floyd, and the many others who have suffered at the hands of injustice.

Members of the Leeward CC Student Government strongly support and encourage our students to voice their opinions and concerns in a safe and respectful manner.

Leeward’s Administration and the members of Student Government, stand together with the united voices across the nation, calling for peace and justice for all. On behalf of Leeward's faculty, staff and students, we urge everyone to consider the words of Barack Obama, who shared “If, going forward, we can channel our justifiable anger into peaceful, sustained and effective action, then this moment can be a real turning point in our nation’s long journey to live up to our highest ideals.”
