Early on Saturday morning, Mark Lacasandile is busy preparing a set of micrometers for members of Hawai‘i Youth Challenge program. He explains, “The program doesn’t have all the facilities they need to handle some of the training, so the students come here to Leeward to do some of the hands-on portions of their learning. While they’re here, I wanted to take them through the ins and outs of these new micrometers!”
The National Guard Youth Challenge Program is a community-based program that leads, trains and mentors 16-18 year old youth so that they may become productive citizens in America’s future. The award-winning program has been recognized as one of the nation’s most effective and cost efficient programs for targeting youth who are at the greatest risk for substance abuse, teen pregnancy, delinquency, and criminal activity.
The students were quite engaged in the morning’s topics. Hope they’ll return as Automotive majors!
