Academic Affairs Update

Welcome to the fall 2017 semester! I hope you have had a great first week and are looking forward to this academic year as much as I am. I wanted to share a few things with you as we start the year.

  1. Where is BLDGE?
  2. Convocation Handout and Slides
  3. Wildly Important Goal
  4. Acceleration Initiative

1. Where is BLDGE?
You may have had a student ask you where BLDGE is (otherwise known as the Buldge). We are pleased to have additional classroom capacity this semester with the use of the E Building in the Diamond Head portables. The new OCEWD complex was built in front of Building E, so please direct students towards the OCEWD complex next to the parking lot at the Diamond Head side of campus. We appreciate your help as students adjust to this new location.

2. Convocation Handout and Slides
It was so great to see the turnout at convocation last week. I know it's difficult for some of you to attend, so I'm attaching a copy of the convocation handout. I'm also attaching a PDF of the Accreditation Team's slides and my slides. Please let me know if you have any questions.

The first draft of the Self Evaluation Report will be out in a few weeks. If you are interested in being a reader and providing feedback, please complete the form at this link. If you submitted a card at convocation, we have your name! Thank you!

3. Wildly Important Goal (WIG)
At convocation I talked about focusing our efforts this year on one Wildly Important Goal - keeping the students we have! There are many ways to support our students and encourage them to be persistent. I will be working with the divisions, units, and areas to pick one or two goals to focus on that will help us achieve our WIG.

4. Acceleration Initiative
We recently received results from the UHCC system from the first year of our fully scaled Acceleration Initiative efforts, and I wanted to share this information with all of you. Please see the attachment which shows Leeward is leading the way with moving students through college-level math and English in one year. Many thanks to the math and English faculty who have worked so hard to identify the best models for Leeward, and who have put in many hours to revise the curriculum. Your efforts are making a difference for our students!

Have a great semester!
