For students. By students. An impressive tagline for the newest service available to Leeward students.
The Hub, the student HelpDesk, provides free computer technical support to Leeward students. Coordinated by Leeward's Information and Computer Science program, The Hub is the first help desk staffed by students interns who are receiving college credits for a class.
Computer Science students solve problems, provide advice and troubleshoot hardware, software, cloud and wifi concerns. Micah Angeles, Hub Manager, states, "We offer basic computer services for Leeward students such as: software installation, basic hardware repair (e.g replacing internal hard drive and power supply), virus/malware removal, assist with issues on Laulima, wifi connection and UH Wifi passthrough."
Micah continued, "We want students to save money and get good advice. We hope they'll have a better understanding of their devices and how can they prevent problems to occur in the future. More importantly, learning about technology might help encourage the students to major in ICS."
Staff at The Hub offer the following "insider tips:"
- Install anti-virus apps such as MacAffee or Norton. However, don't install more than one because that might cause some problems
- Change your password (e.g email and so forth) at least every 4 months in order to keep your information safe.
- Always keep your systems up to date.
The Hub is located in DA 205A and is open from 8am-4pm, Mondays-Fridays.
The Hub is funded by a grant awarded under the Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training Grants, as implemented by the U.S. Department of Labor's Employment and Training Administration.
