When you need information about something that's happening in a particular place, the best source for that information is often the local newspapers and magazines. There are several tools you can use to find information in Hawaiʻi newspapers and magazines.
The library subscribes to ProQuest News & Newspapers, which provides full-text access to articles from The Honolulu Advertiser (Nov. 30, 2002 - June 6, 2010), Honolulu Star-Bulletin (March 18, 1996 - June 6, 2010), and the Honolulu Star-Advertiser (June 7, 2010 - present). Pictures and graphics from the newspapers are not available from this database.
The Hawaiʻi Newspaper Index is an index to articles about Hawaiʻi published in The Honolulu Advertiser, Honolulu Star-Bulletin, and Honolulu Star-Advertiser. The index is produced by the Hawaiʻi State Public Library System. The online index covers articles going back to 1989. For articles published between 1929 and 1994, the index exists as a set of books that you need to come into the library to use. The actual articles are not available from the index. You will need to use the citations from the index to find articles in the newspaper microfilm.
The Hawaiʻi Pacific Journal Index in an index to periodicals published in Hawaiʻi and the Pacific region, including Honolulu Weekly and Midweek. HPJI is produced by the UH-Mānoa Libraries. It is not a full-text database. Leeward CC Library subscribes to some of the publications indexed in HPJI. UH-Mānoa has all of the publications. One of the publications, Ka Wai Ola o OHA, is available on the Office of Hawaiian Affairs website.
The EBSCOhost database Regional Business News covers regional business publications, including Hawaii Business magazine (indexing for 1994-present, full-text articles for 1994-2005).
The Leeward CC Library has older issues of periodicals on microfilm, including The Honolulu Advertiser and Honolulu Star-Bulletin back to 1929, The Garden Island from 1911 to 1966, and Paradise of the Pacific from 1888 to 1966.
