Ka 'Umeke Ka'eo Writing Achievement Awards

Ka 'Umeke Kā'eo
Native Hawaiian Writing Achievement Awards

Submission Guidelines:
Essays, short stories, or poetry writing about Native Hawaiian identity, language and literature, history, arts and crafts,  politics, lands, water, and nature.

Deadline:
All submissions must be emailed to kaumeke [at] hawaii [dot] edu by Wednesday, April 25, 2012. All submissions must include a completed submission form.

Students may also want to submit their work for publication in Leeward CC’s online Pupu A 'O 'Ewa Native Hawaiian Arts and Literary Magazine.

Awards:
Two (2) $100 awards for writing in the English language
Two (2) $100 awards for writing in the Hawaiian language

Eligibility:
Students must meet the following requirements:
1.  must carry at least 6 credit during the semester (Spring 2012)
2.  Leeward CC declared as your home campus
3. Work must be the student’s own original work

Winners must agree to allow their names and photos be used in the winners announcement

Awards are sponsored by the Language Arts Division, Leeward CC

Congratulations to the winners of the Language Arts Ka 'Umeke Kā'eo Native Hawaiian Writing Achievement Awards for Spring 2012!

For writing in the Hawaiian language:

-- Kepo'o Keli'ipa'akaua, No ka Lawai'a 'Olu'olu a me ka Lawai'a Pī (short story)
-- Puluke Pascua, Lana (poetry)

For writing in the English language:

-- Jacob Anthony Kaumuali'i Titcomb, The World Isn't Flat, and I am Hawaiian (short story)
-- Charissa Wai’alae, Ku'u Hawai'i (poetry)

Their winning submissions will be published in the Fall 2012 issue of Pupu A 'O 'Ewa Native Arts and Literary Online Magazine!

The goals of Ka 'Umeke Ka'eo are to recognize the talented students at Leeward CC and to encourage self-expression on Native Hawaiian identity, culture, language, and 'aina. Look for their original work in the inaugural issue of Pupu A 'O 'Ewa Native Hawaiian Arts and Literary Magazine in Fall 2012!
