Financial Aid Types

Types of Financial Aid
There are many types of Financial Aid opportunities. If you need help finding the right type of aid, contact us and we'll assist you with finding the right aid for your situation.

  • Scholarships and grants do not need to be repaid.
  • Loans need to be repaid within the agreed time period.
  • Employment is the opportunity to work on campus

Boeing Scholarship
: Must have a GPA of at least 2.5; minimum enrollment is 6 credits; major must be Business Technology or ICS. Award is for first degree students only; must file a FAFSA and demonstrate financial need.

Charles R. Hemenway Scholarship
: For bonafide Hawaii resident; requires a personal statement and a letter of recommendation; minimum enrollment is 6 credits; award is for first degree students only; must file a FAFSA and demonstrate financial need; apply on-line with Star Scholarship.

Federal Pell Grant (PELL): A federal grant for students who have not yet received a Bachelor's Degree.

Federal Perkins Loan
: A federal loan with annual simple interest of 5%. Interest begins 9 months after student ceases to be enrolled for at least 6 credits. Award is for first degree students only.

Federal Direct PLUS Loan
: A federal loan for parents of dependent students. The loan amount is based on the student's cost of attendance minus any aid awarded to the student. Repayment of this loan usually begins 60 days after the funds are disbursed for the academic year. The student must be enrolled at least half-time.

Federal Direct Subsidized Loan: A federal fixed rate loan awarded to students who demonstrate financial need. The loan is funded by the federal government. The federal government pays the interest on the loan until repayment begins and/or while you are in deferment. You must be enrolled at least half-time at Leeward CC to receive this loan.

Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan: A federal fixed rate loan awarded to students who do not demonstrate financial need, but it may also be used to supplement a Subsidized Direct Loan. The federal government does not pay for the interest on this loan. The student is responsible for the interest from the time of disbursement until repayment in full. You must be enrolled at least half-time at Leeward CC to receive this loan.

Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant
: A federal grant for students with exceptional financial need and is eligible for the Federal Pell Grant; student must not have received a Bachelor's Degree; minimum enrollment is 6 credits. Award is for first degree students only.

Federal Work Study Program
: Student receives priority for part-time on-campus employment; student must monitor earnings based on FWS award; minimum enrollment is 6 credits.

Hawaii Veterans Memorial Fund
: For a bonafide Hawaii resident; requires a personal statement and a letter of recommendation; must be enrolled for 12 credits or more; award is for first degree students only; must file a FAFSA and demonstrate financial need; apply on-line with Star Scholarship.

Leeward CC Achievement Scholarship
: Must have a GPA of at least 3.0; minimum enrollment is 6 credits; may also require a recommendation by a counselor/department and 50 hours of community service. Award is for first degree students only.

Leeward CC Centennial Scholarship: For students who graduated from a Hawaii high school and entering Leeward starting fall 2007; must be a bonafide Hawaii resident; must be enrolled for 12 credits or more; must submit a final official high school transcript with a grade point average of at least 3.8 OR have 1800 on the 3-part SAT Reasoning Test or ACT equivalent. Award is for first degree students only.

Leeward CC Chancellor's High School Scholarship
: For incoming freshmen who graduated from a Hawaii high school and entering Leeward starting fall 2008; must have the highest cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or greater; minimum enrollment is 6 credits.

Leeward CC Chancellor's Merit Scholarship
: for continuing Leeward students with a cumulative grade point average of 4.0; awards based availability of funds; minimum enrollment is 6 credits.

Leeward CC High School Scholarship
: For bonafide Hawaii resident; must have a GPA of at least 3.0; minimum enrollment is 6 credits. Must be nominated by a High School Counselor. Award is for first degree students only.

Leeward CC International Student Scholarship
: Must have a GPA of at least 3.0; must be enrolled for 12 credits or more; must be a non-resident and not a U.S. citizen; award is for first degree students only: application available on-line with Star Scholarship.

Leeward CC Opportunity Scholarship
: An institutional scholarship; minimum enrollment is 6 credits; must file a FAFSA and demonstrate financial need. Award is for first degree students only.

Leeward CC Pacific Islander Scholarship
: Must be citizens of an eligible Pacific Island; Must have a GPA of at least 2.0; minimum enrollment is 6 credits; must file a FAFSA and demonstrate financial need. Award is for first degree students only.

Ruth E. Black Scholarship: For bonafide Hawaii resident whose parents are/were a part of the construction industry; minimum enrollment is 6 credits; must file a FAFSA and demonstrate financial need; award is for first degree students only.

Second Century Scholarship: Priority to a bonafide Hawaii resident; must be Native Hawaiian; minimum enrollment is 6 credits; must file a FAFSA and demonstrate financial need.

State of Hawaii B Plus Scholarship: For incoming students who graduated from a public Hawaii high school in spring 2005 or later and is eligible for the Federal Pell Grant; must be a bonafide Hawaii resident; minimum enrollment is 6 credits; must submit a final official high school transcript with a GPA of at least 3.0. Award is for first degree students only.

State Higher Education Loan:
Must be a bonafide Hawaii resident; a state loan with an annual 5% simple interest. Interest begins 9 months after the student ceases to be enrolled for at least 6 credits; must file a FAFSA and demonstrate financial need. Award is for first degree students only.
