Title: “Vikings: the Civilized Barbarians”
Viking lore still fascinates after so many centuries. Mention the Vikings, and people envision herculean blond warriors in horned helmets, plundering, pillaging, and terrorizing everyone in their midst. But this is only one aspect of their story. Who really were the Vikings? What did they believe? What is their cultural contribution? This talk will focus on their exquisite art and architecture, which challenges popular conceptions of Vikings as ferocious barbarians and nothing more. In fact the Vikings were much more -- yes, they were the savage scourge of medieval Europe, but they were also meticulous craftsmen, expert shipbuilders, fine metalworkers, and talented architects whose legacy is alive and well in Scandinavia today.
