Essential Skills for Distance Education
Distance education is a convenient way to earn college credit, especially if you are too busy to commute to campus or your work hours make traditional college classes impossible.
Before you consider taking classes as a distance learner, it's important to determine if you have the skills necessary for success.
Before registering as a distance learner, there are several questions you should ask yourself. If you can answer "yes" to the following questions then distance education courses are a good match for you.
Do I like working and learning on a computer or by television?
Am I comfortable with the technology?
Am I self-disciplined enough to follow lessons on my own?
Will I be comfortable if I don't get to see the instructor in person and have to ask questions by e-mail or telephone?
Do I have good study skills?
Am I willing to participate and interact with others in my course?
Alternate Technology Access Plan: Every student registering for a Distance Education course (Cable or Web) is responsible for finding immediate alternate access to a computer with Internet connectivity, or cable television, as a backup for any technical difficulties they may experience. Technical difficulties can include, but are not limited to, problems with a student's computer hardware/software; inoperability of a student's VCR or DVR; or lack of service by a student's Internet Service Provider (ISP) or Cable Provider. Technical issues do not constitute the extension of an assignment, project, quiz or exam deadline unless agreed upon by the instructor.
An Alternate Technology Access Plan must be made by the student prior to the start of the semester and used immediately when they encounter technical difficulties. The student is required to continue course work, using their alternate plan of access, while independently resolving any technical issues with hardware/software, VCR/DVD, ISP, or Cable Provider.Need further assistance?
